In Italy, 40% of the wine produced belongs to the premium category (DOC and DOCG in particular). However, only a part is destined for the domestic market. It is the foreign demand that pushes a significant part of production to take the path of international routes. The wine sector represents, in fact, one of the major excellences in which Made in Italy is expressed in the world today. Overall, the export turnover is worth about seven billion dollars. As the Nomisma Wine Monitor notes, two countries in which Italian exports have grown particularly in recent years are Japan and Canada, with which there is a free trade agreement with the European Union.

Now, after a 2020 that saw a general decline in consumption due to severe restrictions on moving around and the closure of cafés and restaurants, the Italian wine market has seen an important recovery in 2021 and expects further growth in 2022.

Today, the premium category wine supply chain is subjected to dynamics that jeopardize the quality of the product: from transport conditions that are often inadequate to storing bottles in rooms with too high a temperature (data show that 25% bottles arriving on the consumer’s table are damaged due to incorrect transport and storage conditions). Not to mention, finally, the counterfeits that affect all luxury goods and generate huge economic losses for producers every year.

Somelia, the new Enterprise founded in 2021 within the Enterprises Engine BluHub, responds to these quality and safety needs. The goal of the company? Establishing a digital connection between two interlocutors that are now very distant: on the one hand the wine producers, on the other the consumers, through a system that guarantees constant monitoring of the quality of the product from the cellar to the table.

The solution offered by Somelia consists of three elements:

  • Sensorized capsules: reusable and without battery, they monitor the contents of the wine bottle, detect the state of the cork and the parameters of the external environment.

  • Application and platform: intelligent and always up-to-date solutions create a digital connection between the winery and the final consumer, allowing users to obtain information on the status of the single bottle throughout the supply chain.

  • A set of additional services: includes the collection and analysis of data on product tracking, support and protection in anti-counterfeiting actions, customer clustering, support in the installation and management of Somelia products.

Somelia creates a certified and sustainable network that accompanies the bottles of wine from the producer to the consumer, monitoring their quality. The unique code associated with each device also guarantees the authenticity of the product, protecting the winery and the consumer from any form of counterfeiting.
