A device that recognizes people’s movements and gestures as well as the objects it is surrounded by. A device that allows real-time mapping of the workspace, being in this way able to adapt the movements of the robots to which it is connected. Smart Robots, the latest generation of collaborative robots («cobots»), is a small object of moderate weight capable of instantaneously recognizing and interpreting everything that is happening in the workspace, enabling the robot to become more flexible and to react to sudden changes in the work process. The cognitive capabilities of the system provide synergic interaction and collaboration between humans, which focus just on high value-added tasks, and robots, which take care of the most repetitive, alienating activities supporting human operations. This revolutionary high-tech solution has been developed by Smart Robots, an e-Novia owned start-up from Milan. Born only a few months ago as a spin-off from the Politecnico of Milan, Smart Robots has already attracted great attention at numerous international robotics events, from the «Innorobo» in Paris to the «International Conference on Robotics and Automation» held in Singapore and the «APAC Innovation Summit» held in Hong Kong.

But why are we talking here about a revolution within the realm of «cobots»? Because Smart Robots is a device that makes machines become considerably more flexible, enabling in this way new and unprecedented forms of interaction between humans and robots. «Through the combination of advanced sensors – explains Carlo Ongini, the co-founder of Smart Robots who has recently been selected by the prestigious Mit Technology Review one of the ten best under 35 innovators in Italy– Smart Robots allows the recognition of human movements and gestures, the recognition of objects and the mapping of the environment. Such real-time mapping of the workplace is helping robots to become more flexible and capable of reacting to sudden changes in the work process.
