Taking the best of a traditional business and increasingly making it a sector with a high rate of sustainable innovation. This is the challenge that e-Novia has taken up together with Mutti, a historic company from Parma specialized in tomato processing. The project we have created is called InstaFactory: a factory located directly in the field to reduce the transport of raw material to zero and transform the tomato into puree a few seconds after having collected it.

 

The complexity associated with tomato processing lies in the time span in which it must be harvested and processed. The cultivation of the product is strongly subject to natural cycles and climatic variations. In the event of a hailstorm or a particularly rainy season, it is necessary to rethink the entire production, which can sometimes be reduced by as much as 15%. The effort of a farm therefore consists in managing a constant emergency. For this reason, building a factory that operates directly in the field represents an opportunity that can change the way campaigns are managed.

 

As there are no other examples on the market, the creation of the InstaFactory required a free and creative and, at the same time, concrete and precise approach. The goal was, right from the start, the creation of an efficient and functional system, according to the concept of MVP (Minimum Viable Product), which is the basis of all the non-linear innovation processes that characterize every e-Novia project.

 

e-Novia solved solved an equation, balancing the variables – size of the Factory, use of resources and quantity of transformable product – to guarantee the correct quantities of final product, with the result of a better quality, determined by the reduction of those conditions capable of deteriorating tomatoes.

 

The plant consists of two modules of nine meters each, transportable, which contain all the miniaturized machines. It works with a generator and is managed by six people, but it can also be operated entirely remotely. It is a self-contained and self-sufficient plant in terms of use of water and energy and can connect with other plants located in different production sites.

 

The solution is in line with the requirements of Industry 4.0, thanks to its high levels of automation and interconnection. An interconnection that does not end with the communication between the mechanical parts, but which allows the sharing of experiences made in common to improve the final product. e-Novia has developed a system that learns from experience, which works with Artificial Intelligence and which predicts, prescribes and persuades.

 

It was an extremely fascinating journey which, however, has not ended yet. On the one hand, an incremental development to further reduce the environmental impact of the InstaFactory. On the other hand, the recovery of those deep technologies which are ready to be put to work in agriculture: from autonomous agricultural vehicles to robotic solutions for agrotech.
